ごみ

The most challenging thing in Hayama so far (aside from driving on the wrong side of the road) is how to trash garbage. A 42 page booklet of trash instruction tells us when, what, and how we dispose or recycle. Tue and Fri: burnable garbage (kitchen waste, newspapers and magazines, cardboard boxes, washed/flattened milk cartons). Mon: non-burnable garbage (cans, bottles, batteries). Wed: plastic (wrappers and containers). Fri: mixed paper. 2nd and 4th Wed: plastic bottles (PET). Large items: bring them to the Clean Center... Did you get it?

予想通り、ごみの捨て方に四苦八苦しています。可燃ごみ・不燃ごみ・プラスチック・紙・段ボール・ペットボトル・缶・ビン、、、ちゃんと分別しようとすると、台所がごみで一杯になってしまいます。アルバマールの広大なリサイクルセンター（いつでも誰でも持ち込める）が懐かしい・・・

初日の出（羊羹）

The first Wagashi (Japanese Sweet, often made of Azuki bean paste) I had. The name of this one was the first sunrise of the year (the white part is meant to be Mt. Fuji).

初日の出というおめでたい名の羊羹をいただきました。富士山の左側に、炎のように見える赤い部分が太陽です。金太郎飴みたい！　大変結構なお味でした。

理髪店３代目Ｙさん

First hair cut in Hayama. Mr. Y is a third generation barber. His grandfather started a barber shop at this place more than 80 years ago. His mother succeeded her father's business. Then Mr. Y took over. Always at this same place.

葉山ではじめてのヘアカット。理容師のＹさんは、美容師でもあります。おじいさん、お母さん、Ｙさん、と３代続いている葉山の名物「床屋」さん。

おじさんの野菜

Suddenly, a pickup truck full of vegetables came out of nowhere and stopped in front of our apartment building. I don't know if 3500 yen for this much of stuff is reasonable or not, but they surely look good.

野菜や果物やおいしそうなものをいっぱい積んだトラックがどこからともなくやってきてアパートの前に止まりました。ためしにちょっと買ってみました（３５００円なり）。

４４時間

The institute treats us as 'foreigners'. All electronic appliances in our apartment have English translation (do we need it?). This washing machine instruction, for example, says it needs 44 more hours to get it done (I can read the Japanese letter 'min' right below 'hours').

主人は日本人なのに「外国人招聘研究員」。アパートの電化製品のスイッチにはほとんど英訳がついています。だけど、この洗濯機、あと「４４時間（hours）」かかるんですか・・・（そんなに待てません）。

ピーナツの生涯

United Airlines handles baggages nicely. All my peanuts cans now look like this...

荷物を開けたら、おみやげのピーナツの缶がみなへこんでいました。味は同じ（だといいけど・・・）。

晩ごはん

Very first meal in Japan. Don't think it's just a Denny's you know. After all it is a JAPANESE Denny's and the food is great.

葉山に着いたらもう夜。日本上陸後最初の食事は葉山（逗子）のデニーズ（実は結構おいしい）。

着きました

There! Arrived in Japan (after 13 and a half hours flight and one and a half hour drive)! My husband, myself, and all the boxes and the suitcases!

飛行機は予定通り成田に到着、成田からそのまま主人の運転で葉山に到着。荷物もひとつのこらず到着。いたって順調です。

きつねらあーめん

United Airlines serves everybody a Cup Noodle with Fried Tofu as a snack. It would be nicer if I can use a pair of chopsticks...

ユナイテッドの太平洋線ではスナックに「きつねらあーめん」が出ます。このネーミングもすごいけど、「すいかスプーン」（？）みたいなお匙で食べるという発想もすごい（マイ箸を持ってくればよかった）。

出発

Finally! Heading for Japan! (With this plane across the ocean? I hope not.)

米国時間１２月２５日朝１０時（日本時間ではすでに２６日午前０時）、いよいよシャーロッツビル空港より出発です。

荷造り

The day of packing. Let's put this monitor in the box also. No, no grand piano, please. Just the oboe and the English horn.

さすがにもうパッキングしないとマズイです。いつも台所で使っているこのモニターも箱に入れます。グランドピアノは、、、箱に入れません（オーボエとイングリッシュホルンは持っていく）。

バージニアのおみやげ

Whenever I go to Japan, I bring Virginia Peanuts to my friends because Virginia Peanuts taste so good. This time I'm bringing Virginia Maple Syrup, too, for a change.

バージニア土産というと、ピーナツがおいしいのですが、バージニア産のメープルシロップもあるようで（実は自分ではまだ食べたことなし）、今回はじめて日本に持って行きます（先着５名様のみ）。

マージャン

My niece came to visit us. My son came home also. With my daughter at home, of course we played Mah-Jong. What else can we do? (Packing, maybe.)

姪が遊びに来てくれました（嬉しい）。息子が冬休みで家に帰ってきました（嬉しい）。娘と私の４人でへたなマージャン大会です（嬉しい）。（荷造りは？）

おでんとすき焼き

H. has finally booked her ticket to Japan! J. and N. organized a deliciously wonderful party for her family. (3 more days before we leave Charlottesville)

Ｏさんが２９日に帰国されることが決まり、Ｉさん宅で送別会をしました。食べて笑って、ついでに我が家も送別されました（出発まであと３日）。

オーブンバッグ

Bought some oven bags (actually 'many' not 'some'). Hoping to roast some chickens in Japan. Then we found out that there is NO OVEN in my kitchen in Hayama...

葉山のアパートに友人が訪ねてきたら鶏の丸焼きをしよう！　と思ってシャーロッツビルでいつも使っているオーブンバッグを３箱買いました。ところが・・・葉山のアパートの台所にはオーブンがないことが判明、、、我々はやはり相当日本の常識からズレています。（出発まであと５日）
