箱根

We visited a 'Yosegi' handicraft shop in Hakone with the R. family on the way home from Atami. Hakone is famous for its 'Yosegi', a traditional wood mosaic work. We all admired the beauty and the elaboration of it.

Ｒ教授一家と熱海から箱根を通って葉山に戻りました。箱根の伝統工芸品である精巧な寄木細工の美しさには感心しました。

友人家族と熱海にて

An impulsive mini-trip to Atami. My husband's good friend (Prof. R.) and his family are travelling in Japan before the international symposium (June 25-27) starts in Hayama, and they happened to stay one night in Atami (a famous hot spring resort) so we decided to join them there. Their 14 year old daughter and 12 year old son seemed to like the hot spring and the Japanese style Ryokan (inn) a lot.

突然ですが、熱海からです。今週葉山で行なわれる国際会議に出席するため、先週から来日している主人の友人（Ｒ教授）家族が、会議の前に日本各地を旅行しているのですが、関西旅行を終えて熱海にやってきたので思い立って主人と私も一緒の宿に一泊しました。１４歳のお嬢さんと１２歳の息子さんも旅館と温泉がおおいに気に入ったようです。

誕生日は雨

It's official. I'm one more year older now that I had my birthday (do not ask how old I am because I'm old). Am I happy? Yes. I'm so grateful! (The heavy rain warning & the heavy rain didn't bother me.)

日本で誕生日を迎えました。三浦半島は大雨警報が発令されるほどの大荒れのお天気でしたが、お陰様で無事にまたひとつ歳をとりました。

Mrs. Y. and two of her three children came all the way from Kagawa, Shikoku, for a (mini) Charlottesville Reunion. Her daughter S. was born in Charlottesville in 2000 (that's the year they went back to Japan) and now she is this tall! No wonder I'm getting old. It's my first time seeing S.'s younger brother R. (the other brother, 10 months old H., didn't come to Tokyo this time). Thank you, the Y. family, I was very happy to see you here! (Also, the Tokyo Tower was a lot of fun!)

四国・香川からわざわざ会いにきてくださったＹさんとお嬢さんのＳちゃん・息子さんのＲ君、遠い所を本当にありがとうございました。お会いするのは８年振り、シャーロッツビルで生まれたＳちゃんがこんなに大きくなって（そもそも弟のＲ君と、今回はお留守番だったＨ君は当時この世に存在すらしていませんでしたし）びっくりです。久し振りにお話できてうれしかったです！（東京タワー、楽しかったですね！）

盛岡名物

A specialty of Morioka, Iwate, Ja-Ja Men and Rei Men noodles. I've seen them only in TV dramas and never eaten before. Now I know that they are delicious (and special)! Thank you very much, Mrs. H.!

岩手・盛岡のじゃじゃ麺と冷麺。ドラマの中では見たことがありましたが、実際に口にするのは生まれてはじめてでした。どちらも独特のおいしさでした。Ｈさん、どうもありがとうございました！

（再び）シャーロッツビル同窓会（六本木・美食米門）

Another Charlottesville Reunion in Roppongi, Tokyo. Mrs. Y.'s husband is the president of the parent company of a large restaurant group so we've got a special discount in a beautiful restaurant. Thank you very much Mr. and Mrs. Y.! We were a party of 14 (+ one baby!) and we all had a wonderful time. Thanks for coming and being 'Charlottesville Friends', everybody! (Mrs. N., Mrs. N., Mrs. M., Mrs. M., Mrs. Y., Mrs. J., Mrs. A., Mrs. T., Mrs. T., Mrs. T. --all the way from Osaka--, Mrs. H., Mrs. W. + baby T., and Mrs. Y.)

今回のシャーロッツビル同窓会は東京近郊に住む皆さんだけでなく、大阪から日帰り参加の方も含め総勢１４人（と赤ちゃん一人）という大ランチ会でした。しかもＹさんのご主人様（大きなレストラングループの親会社の社長さん）の特別な計らいで、格安のお値段で、皆大満足でした。Ｙさん、どうもありがとうございました。Ｎさん・Ｎさん・Ｍさん・Ｍさん・Ｙさん・Ｊさん・Ａさん・Ｔさん・Ｔさん・Ｔさん・Ｈさん・ＷさんとＴ君、そしてＹさん、楽しい会を本当にありがとうございました。

ツバメのヒナ

Two baby swallows in the nest at the bus stop of Nagae Crossing. They've grown so fast thanks to the hard-working parents who keep bringing food every minute.

長柄交差点のバス停横にツバメの巣があります。親鳥たちがせっせとエサを運んだ甲斐あって、二羽のヒナはあっという間に大きくなりました。

ペースメーカー入れ替え

My father-in-law had his first cardiac pacemaker implanted 8 years ago. This time he underwent a replacement with a new and better (smaller) pacemaker and he looks just fine!

義父は８年前に心臓にペースメーカーを入れる手術を受けました。今回は、ペースメーカーと電池を新しいものに入れ替える手術でした。術後は前回よりずっと楽そうです。

（ミニ）サンディエゴ同窓会

A smaller version of San Diego Reunion (in Fujisawa). The U. family was in San Diego from 1986 to 1987. Prof. U. and my husband kept contact with each other all these years and my husband has been giving special lectures at Prof. U.'s university in Tokyo for the past three years or so. Thank you for your long friendship, Prof. U. & Mrs. U.!

サンディエゴ時代にお世話になったＵ先生ご夫妻とのお食事会でした。Ｕ先生と主人はサンディエゴでのご縁がきっかけで仕事の上でもつながりができ、最近ではＵ先生が教授をされている大学に主人が毎年のように講義をしにうかがうようになりました。Ｕ先生＆奥様、サンディエゴでは大変お世話になりました＆現在も大変お世話になっております！

熱川温泉

My sister and I came back from Atagawa Onsen (hot springs in Izu, Shizuoka). We had a nice weather (not a single drop of rain!), a fabulous ocean view room, great hot springs, and delicious food. We visited...

従姉夫婦

Visited my cousin's house in Chigasaki. Finally I could take a close look at the medal (the Order of the Sacred Treasure) her husband was awarded by the Emperor a couple of years ago. There is never enough time to talk everything we want to talk...

茅ヶ崎の従姉の家に遊びに行きました。二年前の叙勲で義従兄が陛下からいただいた瑞宝双光章を見せてもらいました。久し振りにあれこれおしゃべりして、あっという間に時間が過ぎてしまいました。

あと二ヶ月

169 days have passed since our arrival in Hayama. When we first settled here, it was very cold (not just the outside but the inside also, because there is no central heating system). Now it's Japan's famous rainy season, hot and humid. June is also the month of hydrangeas (I like them a lot). We still have two more months in Japan. I can't express how grateful I am to everybody who helped my dream vacation come true (lucky me!).

日本での生活もあとちょうど二ヶ月を残すのみとなりました。葉山に到着した１２月の末は家の中も（外みたいに？）寒くてびっくりしましたが、あっという間に１６９日が過ぎ、いつの間にかアジサイ咲く梅雨の季節になりました。残りの日々も感謝の気持ちを忘れずこころして過ごしたいと思います。

足つぼマッサージ

I came across a Thai-style foot massage salon right in front of Higashi-Zushi station. The price list says a 90 min. massage session costs 8000 yen (7 times more than that in Bangkok).

東逗子駅前にタイ古式足つぼマッサージの店があったので、へーこんなところに・・・と思ってお値段を見てみたら、９０分のコースで８０００円と書いてありました。バンコクでは３５０バーツ（約１２００円）だったので、だいたい７倍くらいです。

息子がニューヨークに帰りました

My son went back to New York. I can't believe that three weeks have past already. It was so fast. I had great fun with him in Japan. Here's the stuff he left -- one book in English and many Japanese comic books.

息子がアメリカに戻りました。３週間あると思って（油断して？）いましたがあっという間に経ってしまいました。とても楽しかったです。英語の本が一冊と漫画がたくさん残りました。

続・サンディエゴ同窓会

The 2nd day of the San Diego Reunion. We went to Kamakura. Thank you very much for coming here all the way from Kyushu & Iwate, Drs. A. and A., Mrs. M., and Mr. & Mrs. H.!

サンディエゴ同窓会の２日目、鎌倉の報国寺と明月院に行きました。Ａ先生ご夫妻、Ｍさん、そしてＨさんご夫妻、わざわざ九州とそして岩手から葉山にきてくださって本当にありがとうございました。久し振りにお会いできとても楽しい２日間でした。

サンディエゴ同窓会

San Diego Reunion. We lived in San Diego from 1986 to 1990 (our son was born there in 1988). I'll never forget the delicious Ramen noodle Mrs. H. used to cook for us (but I don't remember why she did so for us every week!). Drs. A. and A. (a pediatrician and a family doctor) helped our daughter a lot with her asthma and eczema. Mrs. M. (whose father was a Shinto priest) showed her talent in Tea ceremony and Koto performance, etc. How fortunate I am to keep contact with these wonderful people after 20 years.

１９８６年から１９９０年まで、カリフォルニアのサンディエゴに住んでいました（１９８８年うまれの我が家の息子の出生地です）。ポスドクの貧乏暮らしでしたが、Ｈさんが（なぜか）毎週作ってくださるおいしいラーメンをいただくのが楽しみでした。小児喘息でひどいアトピーもあった娘にとって、Ａ先生ご夫妻（ご主人が小児科医・奥様が内科医）の存在はとても心強く、またＭさん（久留米・篠山神社のお嬢さん）はお茶やお琴など、日本紹介の際には大活躍でした。こうして２０年経っても皆さんとのご縁が続いているのは本当に幸せなことです。

単衣の着物

Miss K. helped me again to wear a Kimono. This time it's pink! (I like pink.)

６月なので今回は単衣（ひとえ）の着物、米沢・紅花紬のきれいなピンクです。Ｋさん、いつもながらどうもありがとうございました。

食べすぎです

Surprise, surprise! Two care packages arrived in one day by the overnight refrigerated delivery service, one from Sendai and one from Kurume. Thank you very much, Mrs. F. and Mrs. M.! (Japan is full of nice people + good food!)

仙台からは笹かまぼこ、久留米からは明太子、一日に２つも玉手箱（クール宅急便）が届くなんてびっくり仰天です！　日本にはおいしいものがありすぎます。Ｒさん、Ｋさん、ありがとうございました！！

息子と義父母

Visited my parents-in-law with my son and showed them our Thailand trip pictures. Had an excellent Sashimi dinner there.

My son had a fun time with his friends from Atlanta (Chinatown, Yokohama).

息子の友達がジョージアからたまたま日本に遊びに来たので、一緒に中華街に行きました。

葉山のポストとタイのポスト

I like the post boxes (old-style red pillar boxes) in Hayama very much (I think they are cute). Now I know that the post boxes in Thailand are cute, too!

葉山では、懐かしい丸型ポスト（だるまポスト）がしっかり現役です（私はかわいいと思います）が、タイの四角いポストもなかなかいいと思いました（似てるかも）。

Came back from Bangkok, Thailand. The weather was nice, so we achieved quite a lot. The day we participated in a guided bus tour of the Grand Palace complex, it was very hot and we felt dizzy when we climbed up 50+ stone steps (very steep) of the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). We visited an ancient Thai massage parlor to receive a 90 min. foot massage (but it was the day before, not the day after, we climbed up the stairs).

「微笑みの国」タイより戻りました。お陰様で好天に恵まれ、もりだくさんの楽しい旅行でした。ガイドさん付きのバスツアーで王宮を見学した日はかなり暑く、「暁の寺」の５０数段の急な石段を登った時はちょっとくらくらしました。（タイ古式マッサージで足をマッサージしてもらったのは石段に挑戦する前日でした・・・順番逆が良かった？）

Bangkok is a big and busy city, a mixture of old and new. Despite the apparently big economic gap between rich and poor, the people of Thailand seemed to be quite content, working diligently at each person's position, always keeping the respect and the smile to the others. The workers in my brother and my sister-in-law's house (three house maids, two drivers, three gate keepers and a gardener) were always smiling, too.

バンコクは古いものと新しいものが混在している活気にあふれた街です。タイの人々は勤勉で常に尊敬と笑顔を忘れず、一見したところ貧富の差はかなり大きいようであるにもかかわらず、それぞれの人がそれぞれの持ち場で一所懸命楽しく生きているように見えました。ちなみに兄夫婦の家では、メイドさんが３人、運転手さんが２人、門番さんが３人と庭師さんがひとり、にこにこと勤務していました。

The (hot and spicy) Thai food was wonderful! We also enjoyed the tropical fruits and the Thai desserts, so colorful and cute. I really hope to visit there again.

食べものはどれも美味しく、果物が豊富で、ココナツミルクを使ったデザートや、南国のかわいい色遣いのお菓子等は独特のものでした。機会があればまた是非訪れたいです。

パスポート

We'll be visiting Bangkok, Thailand, for 4 days starting tonight (sorry, this blog won't be updated for a while). My brother is working for a Japanese trading company and now stationed in Bangkok, so we've decided to visit him there while we are in Japan.

今日から４泊の予定でタイのバンコクに行きます（すみません、ブログの更新はしばらくお休みします）。バンコクには私の兄（商社勤務）が駐在しています。

We found out that there is no need to get visas for us to enter Thailand (for up to 30 days' stay), but we do need to show our passports valid for at least 6 months when we enter the country. Mine will expire in December. Whew, that was a close call.

タイに入国するのに（滞在３０日間以内なら）ビザは不要ですが、パスポートの残りの有効期限が入国時に六ヶ月以上ないといけないそうです。私のパスポートは今年１２月に切れるので、危ないところでした。

地震体験車

After spending a long weekend at his uncle's house in Chiba, my son came back to Hayama again. He says he and his cousins had a wonderful time together, including this 'Earthquake Experiencing Car' ride sponsored by Chiba Prefecture. Note that it's not a game but one of those earthquake education tools (I guess we have no earthquake drills in Charlottesville, although UVa just recently had a tornado drill).

週末を主人の弟の家で過ごした息子が、また葉山に戻ってきました。いとこ達とおいしいものを食べ、秋葉原に行ったり、ゲームセンターでゲームをしたり、千葉県の地震体験車に乗って震度７を体験したり、とても楽しかったようです（この写真はゲームをしているように見えますが、ゲームではなく地震体験車です）。シャーロッツビルには地震体験車はたぶん配置されてないと思います。

その名にちなんで

Finished reading Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake' at my friend's recommendation (she'd read it in English but I read the translation by Takayoshi Ogawa). It's a story of an Indian immigrant couple, moved from Calcutta to Massachusetts and started a family there. I nodded about one thousand times while reading it. Those troubles and confusion in adjusting themselves to the new environment and in raising children in a different country are so familiar and similar to my own experiences. The book also describes so well how this couple's American born son felt about his parents' country/culture/religion while he himself didn't quite belong to yuppie New York.

友人に薦められてジュンパ・ラヒリの「その名にちなんで」を読みました（友人は英文のオリジナルを読んだそうですが、私が読んだのは小川高義による日本語訳）。インドからアメリカにやってきた家族の物語です。異国への適応、知らない土地でのはじめての子育て、そしてアメリカで外国籍の両親に育てられる（アメリカ生まれの）子供達の複雑な思いがとても上手に描かれていて、何度も何度も「そうだよね」とうなずきながら読みました。

集金

Finally a fee collector of NHK (the Japanese public television) came to my apartment (yes, a real person visits from door to door to collect money here). I wonder how they found out that I'd been watching without paying. Now that I paid the fee (2,340 yen = ca. 23 dollars per month), it is legitimate for me to watch NHK!

はじめてＮＨＫの集金の人が来ました（今までタダで見てました・・・すみません）。今年の１０月からは、ＮＨＫの訪問集金の制度そのものが無くなり、振込か口座振替だけになるそうで、去って行くおじさんの後姿がこころなしか寂しそうでした。

振袖

Furisode is a type of Kimono with long sleeves which only young and unmarried women are allowed to wear. Many Japanese women wear Furisode at their Seijinshiki (Coming of Age Ceremony) or at commencement. My niece, whose Seijinshiki is coming up, went to a professional photo studio and had a Furisode photo session. She was so beautiful! (This photo is not taken by a photographer but by me.)

姪（ミュージカル歌手兼大学生の）が振袖を着て写真館で写真を撮ってもらったので、私も息子と一緒に見学してきました。とってもきれいでした！（残念ながら写真館の中では写真を撮ることが禁止されていました。）

髪型

My son's got his hair cut. Now his head's right side has very short hair while the left side hair remains just as long as before the haircut. I thought I paid for the whole thing.

息子が理容室で髪を切ってきました。正面から見ると向かって右側は（切る前と同じように）髪が長く、左側は極端に短い。う～ん、最近の髪型は理解できません（でも似合っていると思う）。

飲酒は２０歳になってから

My son turned 20 this month. Now he can drink legally in Japan while he still cannot in the U.S.

今月２０歳の誕生日を迎えた息子は、日本ではお酒が飲めます。アメリカでは２１歳からなので、まだ飲めません。

息子と姉と

Went to Tokyo with my son to see my sister. Ate a cake (no, not all of them).

息子と東京へ行き、姉に会い、ケーキを食べました（これ全部食べたわけじゃありません）。

ゴールデンブリッジ

One of my molars was pulled out about 6 years ago. I think it's about time to fill that space, so I decided to put a golden (18K) bridge. This is definitely the most expensive accessory I've ever worn.

６年前に抜歯した右下の奥歯を、いつまでも抜いたままにしておくと隣の歯が倒れてくると言われたので、「ブリッジ」（ウソの歯ですね）というものを作りました。しかも１８金で。それ相当のお値段でした（私が身に付けるものの中で最も高価）。

Ｊ２サッカーゲーム

Went to watch a soccer game of the Japanese National Football League (J League Division 2), Yokohama FC vs. Avispa Fukuoka, with my son (Mitsuzawa stadium, Yokohama). Yokohama won. We wanted to see Avispa Fukuoka's midfielder (#18) Jun Suzuki play in this game, but he didn't have a chance. Jun started playing soccer with SOCA in Charlottesville (along with his brother and my son) 16 years ago when he was 3 years old and now he is a professional soccer player in Japan!

息子と二人、Ｊ２アビスパ福岡対横浜ＦＣの試合を観に行ってきました（２対１で横浜が勝ちました）。実はアビスパの背番号１８、鈴木惇選手を観に行ったのですが、この試合では出番がなく残念でした。１６年前（鈴木選手が３歳だった頃）シャーロッツビルのＳＯＣＡで鈴木選手のお兄さんや我が家の息子（当時４歳）と一緒にサッカーをはじめた彼が、今や立派なＪリーガーになりました（Ｕ１９の日本代表でもあります）。日本でサッカーの試合を観に行ったのは初めてでしたが、片時も目を離せない好試合で楽しめました。

げんべい

Shopped at 'Genbei' with my son. 'Genbei' started its business in Hayama more than 100 years ago as a TABI (special socks for Kimono) maker. The flip flop sale started about 50 years ago and now the store is famous for the quality, color variety, and original designs of their flip flops. (This is their T-shirt.)

息子と「げんべい」に行きました。「げんべい」は葉山で１００年以上前に足袋屋さんとして創業し、５０年前から売り始めたビーチサンダルで今はすっかり有名になり、観光名所？と化しています（このＴシャツも「げんべい」オリジナル）。

息子が来ました

After a long flight (13 hours) and a long train ride (2 and a half hours), my son arrived in Hayama! The summer vacation of his college (in New York) has already started (the spring trimester of most Japanese colleges will continue through July). He'll stay here for 3 weeks.

ニューヨークで大学に通っている息子が、夏休みで（早い！）日本にやってきました（１３時間の飛行のあとさらに２時間半電車に揺られて）。３週間ほど滞在する予定です。

ヴェルニー公園

It's the season of.......roses! This red one's name is 'Niccolo Paganini'. (Verny Park in Yokosuka)

ヴェルニー公園の薔薇です（横須賀駅前）。この赤い薔薇はニコロ・パガニーニという（バイオリニストの）名前だそうです。

ただいま

Back in Hayama. Happy to see our apartment still standing here (we live on the second floor). The temperature in Hayama is significantly lower than in Fukuoka.

葉山の我が家に戻りました（この建物の２階に住んでいます）。こちらは福岡よりだいぶ気温が低いようです。
